Atlas Cinema Screening: By Hook or By Crook (2001)
"Don't worry about your heart breaking Shy. It breaks open, you can feel everything."
Crip Cinema Archive’s first screening is here.
Join us on Thursday, 15 May at Atlas Cinema in London for a night of DIY, queer, crip magic.
By Hook or By Crook (2001) is a funny, tender, and sexy tribute to mad, queer friendship. A story about sticking together when our worlds comes undone.
By Hook or By Crook, dir. Harry Dodge, Silas Howard, United States, 2001, 103 mins
In this ambling, San Francisco–set buddy film, Shy, a gender-bending butch from small-town Kansas, meets Valentine, a quick-witted, expressive adoptee searching for her birthmother. As they tumble into a messy life of crime, the duo navigates heartbreak and hilarity. A testament to the power of mad, queer friendship - sticking together even when everything's falling apart.
This event will be introduced by Emily Simmons, Curator of Crip Cinema Archive. Please stay after the screening ends for a chat about the crip themes in the film.
Please take a covid test before attending, and stay home if you're experiencing flu-like symptoms or have had a positive Covid test within the last ten days.
With special thanks to Harry Dodge, Silas Howard, and Steak House for permission to screen the film.
Trans people are almost twice as likely to be disabled. Around half of trans people are also disabled. A portion of the ticket sales from this screening will be donated to FiveforFive, a collective fund for trans women, girls and transfem causes in the UK. We encourage you to also signup on their website to give five pounds a month if you're able. 🏳️⚧️
